Specifically, historical romance. I'll start with saying that I find pretty dresses romantic. Maybe it's the flirty girl in me that gets giddy at the thought of a happily ever after with my Prince Charming...while I'm decked in an overflowing gown all dolled up. But that would only be part of the answer. Perhaps the main reason why I write historical romance is because I find great romance and mystery in eras that once were...in chivalry and ladylike manners, in the way people used to dress and in how courtships fared. Sure, there are many things I prefer about our current times but mainly, I just like to daydream.
Love is powerful. It changes people and has the potential to do overwhelming good in people's lives. It heals, restores, and gives us greater insight/wisdom into the world and ourselves. I enjoy writing romance because it allows me to think up many possibilities of how love can come to change the lives of the characters in my stories. Every couple and individual is different, which makes for a unique story each time.
I'm somewhat addicted to the rush of new beginnings, fresh love, the roller coaster of emotions, the intensity of the let-downs, and the joy of reconciliation. Romance books are rides—fun, carnival type rides, except on paper, which allow us to experience new perspectives and emotions attached to those particular perspectives. It's fun. Quite. And I enjoy writing books as much as reading them because the fun never ends.
Stories not only help us grow but escape (mentally, emotionally, this helps get us through the hard parts of life). Stories inspire us. I've read fiction books that have helped me understand or learn something about my life the same as a non-fiction book. Imagination and stories are important to our human experience. And I guess this is pretty much what it comes down to: I love sharing new experiences and perspectives with readers. Art speaks to the essence of our humanity. I feel bonded to other humans through books and stories.
